How Not to Become a Hypertension Statistic

High blood pressure (hypertension) contributes to nearly 1,000 deaths per day in the United States. Many of those deaths could have been prevented.

Hypertension affects about one in three adults — 68 million people — in the United States. Although most people with high blood pressure know they have the condition, about half of them don’t have their blood pressure under control.

You can reduce your chance of becoming a hypertension statistic by taking four simple steps:

  • Walk briskly for 10 minutes, three times a day.
  • Cut back on salt. Add salt only at the table, and avoid processed foods.
  • Eat more fruits, veggies, legumes, and whole grains
  • If your doctor has prescribed medication for high blood pressure, take it regularly.
