Exercise can be an important tool for people living with Parkinson’s disease and may help reduce symptoms of the disease. Doctors have long prescribed exercise and physical therapy to help people with Parkinson’s disease maintain mobility, balance, flexibility, and range of motion. In addition, exercise can help to minimize depression and improve mood.
New research suggests that exercise may actually help to slow the progression of the disease, perhaps by helping brain cells form maintain old connections and form new ones.
People living with Parkinson’s disease should consult their doctors before beginning an exercise program. Suggested exercise types include walking, swimming, water aerobics, tai chi, yoga, and light weight lifting.
