Violence Against Women

Violence against women is a worldwide problem with devastating personal, social, and economic consequences. Here are some stunning facts about the impact of domestic and family violence:

  • Half of all women who were killed in 2012 were murdered by an intimate partner or family member
  • At least one out of three (35%) women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence, either with a partner or non-partner. Some estimates put the proportion women who've experienced intimate partner sexual violence at 70%
  • Approximately 86% of violence against women in European countries goes unreported
  • Sexual harrassment -- another form of violence against women -- is common in Europe and the United States. Nearly half of all women in European countries experience unwanted sexual advances, physical contact, or other forms of sexual harrassment at work. And 83% of high school girls in the United States report experiencing some sort of sexual harassment
  • In the United States, more than 1 out of 10 new HIV infections among women 20 years of age and older can be attributed to intimate partner violence
