Healthy Habits May Reduce the Risk of Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-releated macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of vision loss in people 55 years and older. In people with AMD the central part of the retina, called the macula, deteriorates, causing loss of central vision. Severe AMD affects more than 1.8 million Americans, and an additional 7.3 million people are at high risk of vision loss from the condition.

While experts don’t know exactly what causes AMD, they do know that several lifestyle choices can decrease the risk. You may be able to lower your risk of developing AMD by adopting some basic good health habits:

  • Eat a diet rich in green, leafy vegetables and fish
  • Avoid smoking
  • Exercise regularly
  • Control cholesterol and blood pressure levels
